Day 4: The Lord is my Shepherd

Updated: 7 days ago

Key Verse:

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."

Reading: Psalm 23

Devotional:

When you were younger, you wanted many things. Nice clothes. Toys. Jewelry. Safety. Security. People you could trust. As you have grown older, you seek love, peace, and joy-the fruits of the Spirit. The Lord, your Shepherd, wants good things for you, too.

In our society, we never rest. We fill our social media feeds with news, weather reports, and drama, which makes us anxious. If that isn’t enough, we read content, listen to music, and watch movies, which can force us into a deep depression. Jesus knew His sheep would naturally gravitate toward darkness and forget that He is the Light of the world (John 8:12), which is why He has to reach for His staff.

When my father herded cows, he always kept a staff in the back of his truck. The staff was never intended to hurt the cows; it was used to prod them along or to keep the cows from endangering themselves. Sometimes God has to use the rod and staff to redirect us and correct our behavior.

God, your Father, has a perfect path of righteousness laid out for your life after you become saved.

Unfortunately, we sin to disrupt His plan for our lives. It is then that He has to rein us back into the fold. When we learn to lay down our pride and abide with Him, then we are saying “Yes!” to the goodness and mercy that seek to follow us for the rest of our lives. Rest, my child, and let God restore your soul.

Apply:

  • Identify places or situations where you need God’s rest today. Write down a specific action you can take to pause and seek God’s presence when you feel overwhelmed.

  • Should we fear evil? Provide reasons for your answer.

  • Can you see the goodness of God all around you?

Prayer:

Lord, remind me You are my Shepherd, always ready to lead. Help me obey like Your sheep. Teach me contentment in Your arms. Remind me, You are all I need. Grant me rest and surround me with peace like still waters. Help me reject fear, trusting You are near. You promise to never leave or forsake me.
