Day 6: God is my Light

Updated: 7 days ago

Key Verse:

"Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!" - Psalm 27:14

Reading: Psalm 27

Devotional:

One day, while walking my dog, I thought I saw another dog in my neighbor’s yard. My heart raced as I worried about this unleashed threat chasing Tex, my Dachshund. In my mind, I quickly began to plot an escape. As I approached the house, I realized what I thought was a vicious animal was actually the side arm of a park bench.

As I laughed at myself, this moment made me wonder how often my worries create fears about things that never existed nor ever will. I asked Jesus to forgive me since Philippians 4:6 clearly commands us not to worry.

This realization helped me see that these worries often interfere with my worship. Fear can grip my heart so tightly that I miss out on joyous moments, like walking my dog or seeing the light of God’s creation.

When facing anxiety and depression, we might feel all alone, surrounded by people who don’t seem to care. Yet, according to Psalm 27, God cares. He desires to help us. All we must do is seek Him through prayer and Bible study.

Let go of that fear, or park bench, and believe the Lord can make you courageous while strengthening your heart. Then you will see the beauty of the Lord unfold right before your eyes.

Apply:

  • Identify a specific fear today you want to hand over to the Lord.

  • Which daily habits could you adjust to seek the Lord more intentionally, like David?

  • Write verse 14 on a notecard and work to memorize it.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for promising to never leave nor forsake us. Help me to trust You are there to help me in times of crisis. Let me not compare You to any man. I am not alone, and there is nothing to fear with You on my side. You will provide for me and care for me. Remind me how fear comes from the enemy. I pray that Your light will shine in the dark places of my mind. Help me to trust that you are in control.
