Day 1: God's Word is my Delight

Updated: 7 days ago

Key Verse: "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." - Psalm 1:1-2

Reading: Psalm 1

Devotional:

David opens this Psalm with an if-then statement. Let me explain.

If you avoid ungodly advice, sinful ways, and the company of the sorrowful, but instead delight in the Lord’s law and reflect on it day and night...Then you are like a tree planted by rivers of water: fruitful in season, leaves never withering, succeeding in all you do. This is the man David refers to as “Blessed.”

But if you are unable to leave behind your addiction(s), past mistakes, relationships that suck the life out of you, and turn you away from your Father, then you will live a life of destruction and ruin. If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you will live this same life for eternity.

Proverbs 14:14-19 clearly says, “And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn away from it and pass on. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil, and their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.”

Which path will you choose to follow?

Apply:

  • What specific changes can you make to consistently read the Bible both morning and night?

  • What happens when this tree is planted by the waters?

  • What does it mean when David says, 'Your leaf will not dry up and whatever you do will succeed'?

Prayer:

Lord, help me to seek Godly counsel in everything I say, think, and do. Help me set boundaries as I draw near the cross and further away from the ungodly. I want to be like this tree, receiving its water from You, so I can shine the light of Jesus in a lost and dying world through the fruits I bear. Thank you for preparing a way for me.
