Does God Really Exist?

This is such a great question and one that many people have probably asked at some point during their lifetime. I, too, have pondered this question and wondered what I would say if ever questioned on the existence of God. Well, here's my answer.

When I believed in Jesus Christ at the age of 19 and accepted Him as my Lord and Savior, He immediately took up residence in my heart. His Holy Spirit indwells within me still to this day. His Spirit gives me access to Jesus who in turn is the way to our Heavenly Father. John 14:6 says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." There have been times when I prayed and cried out to Jesus telling Him things I had not shared with anyone else. He not only heard my prayer, but He answered them. I am not saying the answer was always what I had hoped, but I know He answered in the way that was best for me. Psalm 145:17-19 says, "The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works. The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He also will hear their cry and save them.

How else do I know God exists? Well, I'm glad you asked!

While studying the life of Sarai and Hagar this past week, I was reminded of how God keeps His promises. Things written in His Word are unveiling right before our very eyes and have been for centuries. Here's just one example.

Sarai ran ahead of God to ensure her husband Abram would have a son to carry on the family name. Sarai devised a plan for Abram to sleep with her hand maiden, Hagar. Hagar became pregnant with a male child. After finding out the news, Sarai was livid and kicked Hagar out of the camp. While next to a spring of water in the wilderness, an Angel of the Lord encountered Hagar. The angel informed her that she would give birth to a son and call him Ishmael. Apparently, "he would be a wild donkey of a man;  his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers" (Gen. 16:12). If you do a little Google search, you will quickly find out the lineage of Ishmael exists today through Arab tribes. Sarai would eventually give birth to her own son at the ripe 'ole age of 90. This child's name would be Isaac who descended from his father Jacob, also known as Israel. Have we witnessed hostility among Arab nations and the Israelites? Yes and for many years. How could Moses have possibly known this information when writing The Book of Genesis? He didn't, but God did. Every word in the Bible is God-breathed.

Lastly, I know God is real because of what is to come. With my son recently joining the military, I have to be honest and admit that my mind can become overwhelmed with future events. I wrote Matthew 24:6-9 on a notecard and laid it on my desk. It reads, "You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains." Have we witnessed natural disasters like never before? Yes! I recently heard a Californian say they have seen their fair share of wildfires before but never to the extent seen in 2024. Are we seeing wars and rumors of wars? Most definitely! In 2022 we witnessed Russia invade Ukraine and in 2023, Hamas sparked a war with Israel after taking 251 Israelis hostage. Each day, we are nearing the return of Jesus Christ. Even creation longs for the God of the universe to send His Son (Rom. 8:18-25).

I mentioned writing Matthew 24:6 on a notecard. If you flip the notecard over, it carries a message of hope from John 16:33, "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” My friend, God does exist. It is only through Him that we can have peace and have it more abundantly.
